Sharjah has just been selected to host one of the world’s most important gatherings dedicated to children’s books, and it’s a big moment for the UAE.
In 2030, the emirate will welcome the 42nd International Congress of the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY). The UAE will become the first country in the Arab world to host this global meeting.
IBBY has been active since 1953 and is headquartered in Switzerland. The organisation connects professionals across countries to support children’s books, improve access to reading, and encourage collaboration between writers, publishers, educators, and cultural institutions.

The congress takes place every two years. Ottawa (Canada) will host the 2026 edition, followed by Barcelona (Spain) in 2028, before Sharjah takes over in 2030. Each event includes panel discussions, seminars, workshops, exhibitions, and cultural events.
The 2030 edition will take place under the theme “Stories That Change the World.” The programme is expected to focus on areas that directly shape children’s and young adult books, including how stories are developed, how translation works across languages, and how books are designed and produced.
Discussions will also cover how literature connects to environmental and social awareness, as well as bibliotherapy, where reading supports emotional wellbeing.

The city already draws global attention thanks to Sharjah International Book Fair. The 45th edition of SIBF will take place from November 4 to 15, again welcoming popular authors, award winners, and celebrity guests.
IBBY 2030 will put the focus on children’s literature, with professionals from across the industry gathering in Sharjah.
