You’ve probably heard the phrase “once in a blue moon.” On May 31, you can actually see one in the UAE.

A rare Blue Moon is about to make an appearance over the UAE this weekend. Your first chance to catch it will be on the evening of May 30. Peak illumination arrives on May 31 at 3:45 AM, during the night from Saturday to Sunday.

If you’re hoping for a moon in shades of blue, you may be a little disappointed. The name has nothing to do with its appearance. It refers to how rarely the phenomenon occurs, which is also where the famous expression comes from.

A Blue Moon doesn’t stick to a regular schedule. Astronomers expect only about seven of them over a 19-year period. Already wondering when you’ll get another chance? After the May 2026 event, the next Blue Moons are expected on:

  • December 31, 2028
  • September 30, 2031
  • July 31, 2034
  • January 31, 2037

So if you’re out on the evening of May 30 or awake before sunrise on May 31, take a moment to look up. After all, a real “once in a blue moon” moment doesn’t come around very often.
