For runners who love a challenge, January 2027 is bringing something special to Saudi Arabia. Ultra Gobi Series, the world’s best-known desert ultramarathon, is leaving China for the first time since its launch. After more than two decades, the race is heading to AlUla for its first international edition.

The event offers a rare opportunity to experience Ultra Gobi in a completely new setting and marks a proud moment for AlUla as the first host outside China. If you’re planning to join, registration is open until November 15.

Participants can choose from six race categories:

  • Ultra Gobi 400km: a self-supported solo race, which must be finished in less than six days
  • Ultra Gobi A+ (121km): a non-stop solo race
  • Ultra Gobi A (121km Team Race): a four-day race for teams of three to five runners
  • Ultra Gobi B (121km): a supported solo race with overnight camps
  • Ultra Gobi C (30km): a one-day desert run
  • Ultra Gobi Youth (90km): a multi-day challenge

The route will follow parts of the ancient Incense Road, a trade network that once connected Africa, Asia, and Arabia. Along the way, runners will pass desert plains, ancient tombs, and historic routes that played an important role in regional trade for centuries.

Ultra Gobi AlUla will take place from January 13 to 20, 2027.
