Dubai is already known for its cutting-edge technology and futuristic vision, but by 2040, the city will look even more advanced. From flying taxis to a massive metro expansion, Dubai is gearing up for some incredible changes. Let’s take a closer look at what’s coming.
A Bigger and Smarter Dubai Metro by 2040
Dubai’s metro system will be larger and more advanced than ever. By 2040, there will be 140 metro stations covering over 228 square kilometers. A key addition will be the Dubai Metro Blue Line, a 30km route with underground and above-ground sections, integrating seamlessly with the existing network.

What’s even more futuristic? You might not need a Nol card anymore. The RTA plans to introduce biometric palm payments as early as 2026. Just scan your hand and board the train — no tickets, no hassle.
Flying Taxis in 2026: The Future of Urban Travel
By 2026, flying taxis will take off in Dubai, making air travel a part of daily life. These air taxis will be able to transport passengers across the city in minutes at a price comparable to an Uber Black ride. By 2040, they could be as common as regular cabs.

A New Rail Link to Abu Dhabi
Currently, you can only reach the capital from Dubai by road, but that will change soon. The Etihad Rail project will introduce passenger trains, connecting Dubai with Abu Dhabi in under an hour. Other routes will make trips to places like Fujairah possible in just 1 hour and 45 minutes. With the rail infrastructure already in place, it’s only a matter of time before passenger services start running.
High-Tech Self-Driving Electric Pods
Dubai is exploring the idea of self-driving electric pods as a solution to traffic congestion. The Floc Duo Rail pods by Urban.MASS, currently being studied by the RTA, could become a common mode of transport. Each pod will carry up to 16 passengers, providing an eco-friendly and efficient way to get around the city.

Along with self-driving pods, RTA plans to launch innovative Dubai Rail Bus, an eco-friendly public transport solution for the city.
A Greener Dubai: Mangroves and 100 Million New Trees by 2040
By 2040, Dubai will have a 72km stretch of lush coastline covered with mangroves. These trees will help reduce CO2 emissions and protect against coastal erosion. The goal is to plant over 100 million trees, turning parts of Dubai into a green oasis.
Palm Jebel Ali: Dubai’s Second Palm Island by 2040
Dubai’s coastline is expanding with the massive Palm Jebel Ali project. Expected to be fully developed by 2040, this artificial island will span 13.4km and feature over 80 hotels, resorts, beach clubs, and a special ‘celebration village.’

A Bigger and More Advanced Airport by 2050
Dubai’s main airport operations will shift to Al Maktoum International in Dubai South. This airport is undergoing a massive expansion and will eventually be five times bigger than Dubai International Airport (DXB). While the first phase will be completed within a decade, full development will continue well into the 2050s.
World’s Tallest Wellness Resort: Therme Dubai by 2028
By 2028, Dubai will have Therme Dubai, the world’s tallest wellness resort. Located in Zabeel Park, it will feature the world’s largest indoor botanical garden, interactive experiences, and three 18-meter waterfalls. The AED 2 billion project aims to promote health and relaxation in a futuristic setting. Get a sneak peek at Therme Dubai’s incredible design below.
Dubai 2040: A City of Innovation
From faster transport and flying taxis to green initiatives and massive infrastructure projects, Dubai is set to become even more futuristic. With these plans in place, the city is on track to redefine urban living over the next two decades. Buckle up — Dubai’s future is closer than you think!
