British stand-up comedian, actor and writer Eddie Izzard is one of the top names in comedy around the world. Famed for his surreal style and imaginative characters he has starred in numerous films and performed for thousands of fans around the world. In 2007, Izzard was listed as the third best comedian in Channel 4’s list of the 100 Greatest British National Comedians.
Born in Aden, modern day Yemen, in 1962, Izzard began his comedy career at age 20 whilst at the University of Sheffield. By 1987 he had made his first appearance at the famous London venue ‘The Comedy Store’.
Izzard’s comedic career has seen him reach fame for his unique performance style and characters. In his early career he would often appear on stage in drag and has also more recently performed comedy in other languages including French, German, Spanish, Russian and Arabic.
As an actor, Izzard has been in numerous stage plays, including A Day in the Death of Joe Egg, for which he was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Leading Actor. He has also been credited on numerous silver screen productions, including Ocean’s Twelve and Thirteen, Valkyrie and The Lego Batman Movie.
Izzard has more recently gained attention for his marathon and fitness activities, often to help raise money for charity. In 2009 he began running back-to-back marathons, receiving a special award at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards. In 2016 Izzard ran 27 marathons in 27 days for Sport Relief, raising £1.35 million in the process.
