Indian composer and singer Yuvan Shankar Raja is one of the most talented people in the film industry in Tamil Nadu. Raja, who first began composing music at 16, has won numerous awards and had his music as the soundtracks to several Tamil films in his two-decade long career.
Born into a musical family, Raja’s brother, uncles and cousins have all created music for Tamil films. Following his mother’s advice, Raja scored the soundtrack for Aravindhan. At just 16 years old he was one of the youngest composers in the business. He received widespread praise for his music in the 1999 film Poovellam Kettuppar.
Raja continued to record and compose numerous films’ soundtracks and his major success came in 2004 when he won the Filmfare Awards South for Best Music Director – Tamil for his work on 7G Rainbow Colony. This award proved to be the first of many recognizing his talent and dedication to his art.
The accolades continued to roll in for Raja over the next few years, including a 2006 award at the Cyprus International Film Festival for Raam, the Best Music Director award at the Tamil Nadu State Film Awards for Pattiyal and the Ananda Vikitan Award for Composer of the Year in 2007.
With dozens of film scores under his belt and several songs as the main singer, Raja’s career has thrust him into the top of Tamil film. With numerous other awards to his name, Raja has been recognized formally by fans, fellow actors and critics alike.
