All Saints

All Saints

UK-Canadian girl group All Saints are one of the main acts that stole the charts during the 1990s. The group, formed from Melanie Blatt, Shaznay Lewis and Nicole and Natalie Appleton, have sold millions of units and been awarded numerous gongs for their work.

Formed in 1993, the group, which took its most famous form in 1996, was created in the vein of the Spice Girls and Eternal, as the UK market was falling in love with girl and boy bands. Their 1997 single, ‘I Know Where It’s At’ went to Number 4 on the UK Singles Chart but it was the following single that propelled them into pop history.

‘Never Ever’ became All Saints’ most famous track, selling over 1.2 million copies in the UK, becoming double-platinum in the process, and topping the UK and Australian charts. The track went on to win two BRIT Awards for Best British Single and Best British Video and earnt All Saints nominations at the MTV Europe Music Awards for Best Album, Group and New Act.

The following year, also part of the debut album ‘All Saints’, the band’s second single, ‘Under the Bridge / Lady Marmalade’ also topped the UK Charts, as did their third single ‘Bootie Call’. The band again managed to replicate their success with their second album ‘Saints & Sinners’ which saw two singles, ‘Pure Shores’ and ‘Black Coffee’ also top the UK Charts.

Since 2001 the band have been on and off whilst the members pursued solo careers, but their early work has cemented their place in 90s music, with their work often being cited in compilations and memories of the decade.
