Biography & Career:
The Calling is an American rock band from Los Angeles, California, formed in 1996 by lead singer Alex Band and guitarist Aaron Kamin — the two met as teenagers when Kamin was dating Band's sister. Starting out under the name Generation Gap, they eventually caught the attention of veteran music executive Ron Fair, who signed them to RCA Records in 1999. That was when the name became The Calling, and the members began shaping a sound that blended post-grunge emotion with radio-friendly melody, drawing comparisons to Matchbox Twenty, Train, and Third Eye Blind.
The debut album Camino Palmero (2001) catapulted the band to worldwide fame on the strength of the lead single Wherever You Will Go, which topped the Adult Top 40 chart for 23 weeks — the second longest run in the chart's history — and was later named the number one Adult Pop song of the entire 2000s decade by Billboard. Alex Band of The Calling became one of the most recognizable voices in early 2000s rock, delivering emotionally charged performances that resonated across the globe. The follow-up album Two (2004) produced the single Our Lives, which was featured in the closing ceremonies of the 2004 Summer Olympics and as the opening song of the 78th Academy Awards. Despite critical praise, internal tensions and label issues led the band to disband in 2005. After a failed reunion attempt in 2013 — marked by a violent incident in which Band was robbed and assaulted — The Calling officially reformed in 2016 with a new lineup.
The band songs that defined the era remain staples of early 2000s rock radio, and the top songs continue to find new audiences decades later. The best songs from the catalogue stand as a testament to the songwriting chemistry between Band and Kamin — emotionally direct, melodically powerful, and instantly recognizable. In 2024, Alex Band announced new music and management deals, signaling yet another chapter for one of rock's most resilient acts.
