Biography & Career:
Anne-Claire Legendre is a French career diplomat and one of the country’s leading specialists on the Arab world. In February 2026 the board of the Institut du monde arabe in Paris unanimously approved the nomination to lead the institution, making Legendre the first woman to hold the post. The appointment followed the resignation of Jack Lang.

Studies at Sciences Po, Arabic at INALCO and modern literature at Sorbonne Nouvelle laid the foundation for a career devoted to the region. The path ran from a first posting in Yemen through the French mission to the United Nations, consular and ambassadorial posts, and the role of foreign ministry spokesperson. During that period Legendre regularly appeared on French news channels after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. From December 2023 the diplomat advised Emmanuel Macron on North Africa and the Middle East and took part in France’s move to recognise the State of Palestine. The Ordre national du Mérite was awarded in 2023.

Private life stays firmly out of the spotlight. No reliable source names the parents, and there is no confirmed information about a husband or children. Religion has never been discussed publicly either, as the diplomat prefers to let the work speak instead.
