As we approach 2040, students and parents need to understand the shifts happening in the workforce and how to prepare for them. According to Arpit Dugar, CEO of Lab of Future, these changes will be largely driven by artificial intelligence, climate change, food security, and even space exploration.
At the Gulf News Edufair Dubai 2025, Dugar shared important insights into how young people can thrive in an evolving world of work. Here are the key rules he outlined:
1. Develop STEM Skills Early
Dugar emphasized that the World Economic Forum predicts 40,000 new job roles will emerge by 2040, with 75% of the fastest-growing jobs requiring STEM skills. That means fields like AI, robotics, and data science will be at the forefront of the job market. Students who are exposed to STEM subjects early on will have a significant advantage as they move into future careers.

2. Prepare for New Roles We Can’t Yet Imagine
Dugar highlighted some of the unexpected roles that will become essential in the future, such as AI ethicists, digital detoxifiers, and mental mappers. While we can’t fully predict all the future job titles, we do know that creativity and adaptability will be key. Encouraging kids to think outside the box and explore new technologies now will help them prepare for roles that don’t even exist yet.
3. Encourage Hands-On Learning and Real-World Experience
In a world filled with screens, Dugar suggested that schools adopt digital detox policies. Instead of spending hours staring at devices, kids should focus on hands-on learning to build practical, real-world skills. Experiential learning will be vital as we move forward. Students should be encouraged to explore beyond the screen and develop critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.

4. Balance Technology with Soft Skills
While technology will play a major role in the future, Dugar warned that soft skills like communication, emotional intelligence, and creativity will still be in high demand. Children should not only be encouraged to learn about new technologies but also develop strong interpersonal skills.
5. Foster Curiosity About Emerging Technologies
One of the most important rules for success in the AI-driven future is encouraging curiosity. Dugar stressed that children should be given the opportunity to engage with new technologies, understand their impacts, and become lifelong learners. By fostering curiosity from an early age, children can better adapt to future advancements and stay ahead of the curve.

6. Adaptability Will Be Key to Success
Finally, Dugar noted that the future will belong to those who can adapt. As technology advances, the ability to learn quickly and adjust to change will be vital. Encouraging flexibility and a growth mindset will prepare students to navigate a rapidly evolving world. The earlier children are exposed to this mindset, the better prepared they will be for whatever the future holds.
As we look toward Dubai 2040, it’s clear that the city is preparing for a future shaped by innovation and technology. AI initiatives are already making an impact with projects like AI passport control at DXB, AI parking solutions, and AI traffic signal system. By 2027, Abu Dhabi will implement an AI-Native Government, transforming how citizens interact with services.
Stay tuned for all the updates! You won’t want to miss the future of work and technology!
