A major road closure has been announced in Sharjah. The temporary inconvenience for drivers is tied to the Etihad Rail development, which aims to build a nationwide railway network that will eventually link all seven emirates and extend to neighbouring GCC countries.
The Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority confirmed that streets connecting Mleiha Road and Sharjah Ring Road, near University Bridge, will be closed for two months, from Tuesday, July 1 until Saturday, August 30. Check the official map below.

While traffic diversions are expected to impact daily commutes, authorities stress that the move is necessary to accommodate critical infrastructure works. Drivers are encouraged to use alternative routes and follow traffic safety signs to minimise disruptions.
The Etihad Rail project was launched in 2009 and made a huge progress since then. Once completed, it will provide efficient, safe rail transport for both freight and passengers. Phase 2 of the construction is currently underway: extending the network to Sharjah, Dubai, and the northern emirates, as well as border links with Saudi Arabia and Oman.

Sharjah is a central player in the project, serving as a transit hub between the north and the rest of the UAE. Once operational, the railway is expected to help cut road congestion, reduce carbon emissions, and ease long-haul travel across the country.
Residents in Sharjah can look forward to faster, more eco-friendly transport options, better connectivity, and less dependence on private cars when the project wraps up.
