Users of Dubai Metro can expect cooler journeys this summer thanks to a major upgrade by Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). The system overhaul focused on improving air conditioning and ventilation across stations and car parks along the Red and Green Lines.

Temperatures across the Metro network are now being maintained at a steady 24-25°C, a key improvement considering that outdoor temperatures in Dubai can reach over 40°C during summer months.

This upgrade is part of the largest AC and ventilation overhaul in the Metro’s history, targeting 876 ventilation assets at 14 stations and two car parks along the Red Line — all carried out without affecting daily train operations.

Previously, RTA had overhauled 261 units across 13 other stations. With Metro doors opening every two to four minutes and high passenger volumes, managing internal temperatures is essential to ensure consistent comfort on platforms and inside cabins.

The recent upgrade included replacing and refurbishing components such as:

  • Air handling units
  • Fan coil units
  • Chilled water pumps
  • Extract and smoke extract fans
  • Pressurisation units

Additional work covered deep cleaning, bearing and cooling coil replacements, and dynamic balancing — all aimed at restoring systems to their original design performance. The 10-month upgrade programme was carried out during night shifts and off-peak hours to keep stations running smoothly.

This project is part of the RTA’s strategic plan, which focuses on passenger comfort, operational efficiency, and long-term infrastructure sustainability. Phase Three will address remaining ventilation components and critical rooms across the Red Line.

Alongside this upgrade, Dubai continues to improve public transport across the board. Just this week, free Wi-Fi was introduced on all intercity buses departing from the city — part of ongoing efforts to make daily commutes more efficient and convenient.
