A big change is coming to WhatsApp, and if you haven’t heard about it, here are the details. The platform has launched usernames, and soon you’ll be able to use one to chat without sharing your phone number.
The feature will reach accounts gradually over the next few months. If you don’t see it yet, there’s nothing you need to do. You’ll get a notification in the app as soon as usernames become available for your region.
You can reserve your username by updating to the latest version of the app and going to Settings > Account > Username.

As WhatsApp mentioned, some creators, small businesses, and organisations will be able to claim the same username they already use on other Meta platforms, like Instagram or Facebook.
One of the biggest advantages is privacy. You won’t have to share your phone number with strangers, which is useful in community groups, or hobby and activity-based chats. To start a chat with another person, all you’ll need is their exact username.
However, WhatsApp won’t have a searchable directory or suggestions like other platforms.
More people will get access to WhatApp username over the next few months. Until then, you have some time to think of the name you want before someone else claims it. Have one in mind?
