Noticing bright orange-red colors popping up around Dubai? Flame tree season is back. And soon, you’ll be seeing a lot more of them. Dubai Municipality has started planting thousands of new trees across the emirate, following a directive from Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

The flame tree, scientifically known as Delonix regia, is one of the most recognizable sights in Dubai. It handles local climate well and needs around 6-8 hours of direct sunlight each day. Blooming begins in late April and continues through July.

The emirate already has more than 50,000 flame trees. New plantings are being added in places people pass through every day, including residential streets, public parks, entertainment areas, busy intersections, and community majlises.

We’ll start seeing more of them soon. A flame tree reaches the seedling stage in about three months. Once fully grown, a it reaches about 9 to 12 metres in height and spreads up to 15 metres wide. A mature flame tree can live for 40 to 60 years.

Dubai is also getting greener. Huge Central Park is now open inside the Wasl Gate community, and you can go check it out. Don’t want to travel far for a park? Another 35 green spaces are planned within walking distance of residential areas.
