Akon

American singer and rapper Akon is one of the most popular talents in the world, having established himself as a chart-topping, award-winning artist through numerous hits during the early noughties. The singer, who has collaborated with the likes of Michael Jackson, Eminem and Whitney Houston, has seen his career take him all over the world, performing for thousands of fans globally.

Having been born in the USA, Akon then spent a part of his childhood in Senegal where he began to practice music and gained much of his influences that are present in his songs today. Akon first arrived on the world scene with his 2004 album, ‘Trouble’. The album, which topped the UK chart and peaked at Number 18 in the USA, was certified multiple times Gold and Platinum, and also included the single ‘Locked Up’ and ‘Lonely’, which reached Number 2 in the US and topped charts around the world.

Two years later, Akon released ‘Konvicted’, his second studio album. The album peaked at the Number 2 spot in the US and went on to sell over 3 million copies. The album also included a string of international hits including ‘Smack That’ with Eminem, earning him his first of five Grammy nominations, and the two chart-toppers ‘Don’t Matter’ and ‘I Wanna Love You’, which saw him collaborate with Snoop Dogg.

The success continued with ‘Freedom’, Akon’s third album. The album was another Top Ten hit and the lead single, ‘Right Now (Na Na Na)’, was another huge Platinum-selling hit for the artist.

Akon has also been featured alongside numerous artists, with further chart-topping hits to his name. 2005 saw him join Young Jeezy to create ‘Soul Survivor’ as well as further hits with Gwen Stefani on the hit ‘The Sweet Escape’, ‘Dangerous’ with Kardinal Offishall and ‘Sexy *****’ with David Guetta, which was another worldwide hit for the singer.
