Dubai has announced an exciting new project, the Dubai Walk, aimed at creating an extensive 3,300km pedestrian-friendly network to enhance mobility and encourage walking in the city. Spearheaded by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the initiative seeks to redefine urban living with walkways, green trails, and cutting-edge pedestrian facilities.
The Dubai Walk Master Plan will include:
- Climate-controlled pathways allowing pedestrians to walk comfortably year-round with innovative cooling technology.
- 112 km of scenic waterfront pathways and 124 km green trails.
- 110 pedestrian bridges and tunnels to ensure seamless connectivity.
- 150km of rural and mountainous walkways for nature lovers and adventurers.
The project is designed to complement Dubai’s vision of becoming not only bicycle-friendly but also a leader in pedestrian accessibility and sustainability.
The initial phase begins at two significant locations:
- Museum of the Future
A futuristic 2 km-long climate-controlled bridge with open spaces, retail hubs, and connections to major landmarks such as the Dubai World Trade Centre, Emirates Towers, and DIFC.
- Al Ras
A 15km historical trail weaving through old Dubai’s waterfront areas, enriched with greenery and cultural displays.
The Dubai Walk project will be implemented in three phases, expanding across 160 neighborhoods, including Al Barsha 2, Al Khawaneej 2, and Al Mizhar 1. Signature pedestrian bridges on Al Ittihad Street, Tripoli Street, and Dubai-Al Ain Road will enhance connectivity for both urban and suburban areas.
By 2040, Dubai aims to establish over 6,500km of integrated pathways, upgrading 2,300km of existing paths and introducing an additional 900km post-2040.
To encourage walking, a smart app will track users’ walking habits, offer rewards through redeemable points, and provide information on nearby attractions and events. This user-friendly tool combines fitness motivation with exploration, making it ideal for residents and tourists.
Aligned with Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, this initiative supports the vision of a 20-minute city where residents can access essential services and destinations within a short walk or bike ride. Sheikh Mohammed highlighted that the Dubai Walk redefines mobility by offering options ranging from walking and cycling to futuristic aerial taxis.
With this visionary project, Dubai continues its journey to becoming a global leader in urban innovation, sustainability, and quality of life.
