From high-speed trains that will revolutionize travel times to new luxurious train services and international rail expansions, the progress in transforming rail travel across the UAE and the region has been remarkable. Here’s a quick recap of the key milestones in Etihad Rail development.

High-Speed Trains Between Abu Dhabi and Dubai

In a major transport upgrade, Dubai’s Crown Prince, HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, has announced a high-speed rail service that will cut travel time between Abu Dhabi and Dubai to just 30 minutes. The train will run at speeds of up to 350 km/h, making it one of the fastest in the region.

Meet the First Emirati Train Captain

Etihad Rail has introduced Ibrahim Al Hammadi, the first Emirati captain of its passenger train. A recent video shows a prototype train with space for 400 passengers in economy and business class. It also highlights onboard features like WiFi, food and beverage services, and panoramic windows, offering scenic views, including the Almaha Forests of Fujairah.

Business Class by Etihad Rail

Etihad Rail has revealed a sneak peek of its business class cabins, which resemble the herringbone seating layout seen in premium airline cabins. While this offers a new level of comfort, an even more luxurious Orient Express-style train is in the works, promising refined dining and elegant interiors.

Confirmed Travel Times between the main UAE Cities

Etihad Rail has shared estimated travel times for key routes:

  • Abu Dhabi to Dubai: 57 minutes
  • Abu Dhabi to Al Ruwais: 70 minutes
  • Abu Dhabi to Fujairah: 105 minutes

Expanding the Network: UAE to Jordan and Oman

The UAE has signed a deal to help build a 360km rail network in Jordan, which could pave the way for a wider GCC rail system. Meanwhile, Hafeet Rail, the Oman-UAE railway, is moving forward. This 238km railway will allow passengers to travel from Abu Dhabi to Sohar in just 100 minutes. Construction has begun on this USD 3 billion project, marking the first modern cross-border railway in the Arab world.

Where Will the Passenger Stations Be?

So far, Etihad Rail has confirmed stations in Fujairah (Sakamkam) and Sharjah (University City). Reports suggest additional stations in:

  • Dubai – near Jumeirah Golf Estates metro station
  • Abu Dhabi – between Dalma Mall and Mussafah bus station
  • Fujairah – along Al-Hilal Street

First Marine Railway Bridge Now Operational

Etihad Rail has completed its first marine railway bridge, linking Khalifa Port to the Abu Dhabi mainland. This is a major step in integrating rail transport with seaports for smoother cargo and passenger travel.

When Will Etihad Rail Be Ready for Passengers?

There’s no official launch date yet, but passenger services are expected to be fully operational before 2030. The project is already 70% complete, meaning we might see trains running much sooner than expected.
