Widely regarded as one of the greatest people to play the game, Swiss tennis player Roger Federer needs almost no introduction. Having turned professional in 1998, Federer stole the show for much of the noughties, winning four consecutive Laureus World Sportsman of the Year awards and several Grand Slam victories along the way.
Federer’s career has seen him win a record 18 Grand Slam titles, earning him a record total of 302 weeks as the No. 1 tennis player in the world. Federer’s first Grand Slam win came in 2003 when he won the Wimbledon Championship, a title that he went on to win 6 more times.
A favourite for many tournaments he has entered, Federer has won the Australian and US Opens 5 times each, the French open once in 2009, six ATP World Tour Finals and a Silver Medal in the London 2012 Olympics, four years from his Gold Medal victory in the doubles competition in Beijing.
Highly admired for his versatile and effortless playing style, Federer has found himself at the centre of many on-court rivalries against the likes of Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray. His ability to consistently perform at a high level, winning over 80% of his Singles matches, has seen him be voted the ATP Fans’ Favourite 14 times from 2003-2016.
Federer to date holds numerous records, many of which centered around his Grand Slam wins and time as the world No. 1 and he has been attributed to reviving a Golden Age of tennis in which the sport has received record viewers and revenues.
Off court, Federer was listed as the 5th Highest Paid Athlete in the world by Forbes, notably for his endorsement deals with Nike, Rolex, Credit Suisse and more, all of which add to his career winnings which are in excess of $100 million dollars.
