Indian tennis player Sania Mirza is the most successful tennis player from India and one of the leading Doubles players having won six Grand Slam titles, in both women’s and mixed competitions, and spent 91 weeks as the world No. 1 Doubles player.
With notable victories over some of tennis’s top players such as Martina Hingis and Dinara Safina, Mirza climbed the rankings and was ranked at No. 27 in her Singles career. A pioneer for her country, Mirza’s greatest achievements came in the Doubles tournaments where she won the both Women’s Doubles Wimbledon and US Open in 2015 and the Australian Open in 2016. In the Mixed Grand Slams, Mirza was victories at the Australian Open in 2009, French Open in 2012 and the US Open in 2014.
As one of the highest-paid and most-successful athletes’ in India she has been widely praised and was named as one of the ‘50 Heroes of Asia’ and one of the ‘100 Most Influential People in the world’ by Time magazine. She was also named as one of the ‘33 Women Who Made India Proud’ by The Economic Times in 2010.
Having won 15 career titles and earned over $6 million in prize money, Mirza has also represented her country at the Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and the Afro-Asian Games. Off the court she is also a Women’s Goodwill Ambassador in South Asia for the United Nations.
