Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has opened a major infrastructure addition: a new 800-metre-long tunnel at the intersection of Umm Suqeim Street and Al Barsha South Street, near Kings’ School.

This newly completed project is part of the wider Umm Suqeim Street development plan and connects Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and Emirates Road.

With 4 lanes in each direction, the tunnel is capable to accomodate 16,000 vehicles per hour. As a result travel time is reduced by 61%: from 9.7 minutes to 3.8 minutes between Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Al Khail Road.

The tunnel is part of a larger 16 km development stretching from Jumeirah Street to Emirates Road, under the Umm Suqeim-Al Qudra corridor project.

The new tunnel significantly improves access for several growing communities in Dubai, home to more than one million people, including:

  • Al Barsha South 1, 2 and 3
  • Dubai Hills
  • Arjan
  • Dubai Science Park

To increase efficiency, RTA deployed AI-powered drones to track construction progress and collect data.

Dubai’s infrastructure is constantly evolving. Alongside tunnel expansions and road network upgrades, the Blue Line of the Dubai Metro is currently under construction. Temporary road diversions have been put in place in Mirdif and Academic City as part of that ongoing project — more progress updates are expected soon.
